Why Give Away Free Short Stories?

At this point I've written far more short stories for Relic Worlds than I have books, and probably have more words invested in them as well.  But the books are what people pay for, and they're the meat of the story.  So why have short stories I give away for free?

The reason is simply because people have to be dragged kicking and screaming into something new, especially today.  Any more, if it wasn't a popular movie in the '80s that will feed someone's nerd cred, they won't give it a chance.  Ironically, these iconic movies became popular because we in the '80s gave them a chance; but that's another blog post that I've already written.

Asking someone to pay for something they're already not sure they want is all the more difficult.  So the best way to get them involved is to give them something for free.  The first book is of course a good way to do that, and most series do, including Relic Worlds.  However, once that's released, sending it out there into social media without being labeled as a spammer is difficult.  It's better to have something new to send out on a fairly regular basis.

It's also easier to get people to read something smaller that leads them into the broader scope; again, especially today.  I can send a short story to a group on Facebook and have a better chance of them looking at it.  I can even post the story in the message itself.  Additionally, social media works on quantity.  With one book you have a single list of tags and hashtags.  With multiple short stories, each one can have its own list of labels.

Ultimately, having the large list of short stories has built out the world and created an entire new view of the universe of Relic Worlds.

Relic Worlds: Lancaster James & the Shattered Remains of Antiquity is Available

The latest Relic Worlds book is finished and now available! I released parts of it throughout the year in serialized form; now the entire thing is available as one complete book. In this third Relic Worlds installment, Lancaster is searching for three parts of an artifact that is supposed to reveal how to defend against the Siguerans, a dangerous alien race that is supposed to kill all life, as it has three times before. This is the most straightforward treasure hunt of all the stories; the one that is most like what I intended Relic Worlds to be. In some ways, I sort of wish I had started Relic Worlds with this as it creates the feel of what I always meant Relic Worlds to be as a series. After this, the series is going to be less episodic and more of a continuing saga, so this is the end of the sort of intro to Relic Worlds. Relic Worlds, Book 3, Part 1 is Now Available!

The third Relic Worlds book, entitled Lancaster James & the Shattered Remains of Antiquity is off to a start with part 1 now available on Amazon.  There will be three parts to this book, each released three months apart.  When they're all complete, a completed paperback will be released.

The Shattered Remains of Antiquity follows Lancaster as he tries to collect three important pieces to a powerful artifact.  This artifact was believed to be the only solution to the dangerous Sigueran civilization, which is believed to be what killed off so many other alien races throughout the centuries.

Lancaster James and the Shattered Remains of Antiquity is 99 cents and is available on Amazon at: http://amzn.to/2EnzSML

Showing Relic Worlds Showdown at Orccon Game Convention This Weekend

This Saturday, February 17th, I'll be running my game Relic Worlds Showdown at the Orccon Game Convention in Santa Monica.  This is a miniatures game where players take the role of a faction from Relic Worlds and search for treasure, avoiding traps and fighting monsters as they do.

The game was recently released on Wargame Vault and Drivethru RPG, so this will be the first showing of it since its official release.  I'm planning on releasing more for the game as time goes on.
